Biography

Benoni Hill (c. 1787 - 31 October 1841) was a publican and freeman of the City of Gloucester.

Early life and family

Benoni Hill was born in Gloucestershire around 1787, the son of Elijah Hill, a victualler, and his wife Eleanor. He was christened at St Mary-de-Lode Church, Gloucester, in 1790.

He married Charlotte Spencer in Bristol in 1814.

Career

Hill was the landlord of the Bull Inn public house in Bull Lane. He was renowned as the "greatest wit" in the City of Gloucester, and was said to consume 28 pints of his home-brewed beer each day.

He was one of the witnesses that exposed the perjury of the Italian valet Teodoro Maiocchi during the trial of Queen Caroline in claiming that he had never visited England before.

On 8 July 1813, he was appointed a freeman of the City of Gloucester during the mayorship of Edward Weaver.

Death

Hill died in Gloucester on 31 October 1841 at the age of 54.
