Biography
Austin Gleeson (born 27 June 1995) is an Irish hurler who plays as a centre-back for the Waterford senior team and plays his club hurling and football with Mount Sion GAA.
Born in Waterford, Gleeson first excelled at hurling during his schooling at De La Salle College. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Waterford minor team before later joining the under-21 side. Gleeson played centre back in 2013 as Waterford won the All Ireland minor title for the first time since 1948. Three years later, he was part of the same team that captured the county's second All Ireland U-21 title, again beating Galway He made his senior debut during the 2014 championship. Gleeson has since become a regular member of the team and has won one National Hurling League medal.
Gleeson is widely considered as one of the best players in the modern game. He won his first All Star Award in 2016 and is only the second player to have won the Hurler and Young Hurler of the Year awards in the same year.
