August Knuppel was amason and contractor who assisted in the development of Appleton, Wisconsin. Knuppel was born in Germany in 1857. He came to the United States in 1879. After briefly residing in Philadelphia and Milwaukee, he settled in Appleton. In 1900, August Knuppel organized the Appleton Lumber & Fuel Company. In 1904 he organized the Fox River Marble, Granite and Cut Stone Works. Structures built by Knuppel include the Congregational Church (now Trinity Lutheran Church), the Lincoln School, the Lincoln Mill of the Fox River Paper Company (now the Historic Fox River Mills which is on the National Register of Historic Places), the Walter brewery, and numerous banks.
Knuppel was also involved in politics and, after losing the mayoral race in 1911 by just two votes, served as mayor of Appleton from 1915-1916.
