Biography

Artur Martin Schwarz (1887–1963) was an Austrian Orthodontist who is credited for developing the Schwarz double plates in 1956. His appliance later served as basis for developed of Twin Block Appliance.

Life

He graduated from Medical University of Vienna and received his medical degree in 1913. He then served as a military surgeon in WW1. After the war, he studied Otorhinolaryngology under Neumann and practiced that specialty until 1924. He then was introduced to dentistry by Dr. Gottlieb. In 1928, Dr. Schwarz became the leader of the School Dental Service of Vienna Dental Society. In 1939 he became Director of Kieferorthopaedia of Vienna Polyclinic. At the same time Artur worked with Hans Peter Bimler who he taught until 1941. Under Martin Schwarz, the orthodontic service was expanded to cover 3000 patients at that place. In 1951, he received the Professor Extraordinary award from the Polyclinic.

Orthodontics

He wrote more than 160 scientific papers on genesis of anomalies, tissue changes related to tooth movement and orthodontic diagnosis and treatment. He wrote a periodic literature called Lehrgang der Gebiss-Regelung, which was a two volume book. A third edition was published in 1961 by Urban and Schwarzenberg of Vienna.

The double active plate of Schwarz tried to combine the effect of activator appliance and plates by created two separate plates for each arch. These double plates resembled activator in two pieces.
