Biography

Professor Andrew Rowland BMedSci(Hons), BMBS(Hons), MAcadMEd, MFMLM, FRCPCH, FRCEM, FRSA, is a Children’s Doctor (Paediatrician) based in Greater Manchester, UK. Professor Rowland specialises in Paediatric Emergency Medicine.

Early life

Rowland is originally from County Durham, UK. He moved to Nottingham to study medicine at the University of Nottingham in 1995 and, after graduating, moved to Manchester to work as a doctor in the North West of England.

Professional Associations

Rowland holds Fellowships of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, the Royal College of Emergency Medicine, and the Royal Society of Arts. He is also a member of the Academy of Medical Educators, United Kingdom and the Faculty of Medical Leadership and Management.

In 2014 Rowland was appointed as the Head of the UK delegation to the European Union of Medical Specialists / Union Européenne des Médecins Specialistes and in April 2017 he gave a speech in Tel Aviv about the importance of safeguarding the health of patients across Europe. In July 2017 Rowland gave a speech in Madrid about the principle of medical neutrality during times of conflict and the importance of protecting fundamental human rights during the Brexit negotiations.

In 2014 Rowland was awarded a prestigious Fellowship by the Winston Churchill Memorial Trustwhich allowed him to travel internationally to four states in the United States, and to Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia and Hong Kong after which he produced his Fellowship Report, Living on a Railway Line - a major report to improve the safeguarding of vulnerable children in the UK and beyond. In March 2015, following the release of Living on a Railway Line, Rowland attended a Reception at Buckingham Palace to mark the 50th anniversary of the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust.

Career

In 2014 Rowland was awarded an Honorary Professor appointment at Salford University, UK, due to the value with which his work into child advocacy and safeguarding vulnerable children is held locally, nationally and internationally.

In 2014 Rowland's Fellowship from the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust enabled him to investigate the impact of mandatory reporting of child abuse, the work of children's advocacy centres and strategies used to identify children at risk of child sexual exploitation and trafficking.

From 2016-2017 Rowland led a project working with children, young people and professionals to design a new learning and engagement model aimed at giving information to professionals about how to have difficult conversations with children, young people and young adults about relationships, sexuality, home life, domestic abuse, alcohol and drugs and how to spot signs of risk of child sexual exploitation.

In 2017 Rowland was one of the doctors who took part in the emergency medical response to the Manchester Arena Bombing.

In 2017 Rowland was awarded the Association Medal by the British Medical Association (BMA) in recognition of his distinguished service to the association and his contribution to medicine. Rowland’s detailed knowledge on the subject of child protection, his active role in the BMA on safeguarding vulnerable children policy and his achievements in medicine were testified to by the conferring upon him of the Association Medal.

Charitable and voluntary work

In 2015 Rowland launched a global partnership to improve the health, protection and wellbeing of children and young people living on and around the streets and beaches of South West Cambodia.

In 2015 Rowland was appointed on a pro-bono basis to the Board of Directors of M'Lop Tapang - a non-governmental organisation providing health, social care, child protection services and education to children and young people in Cambodia.

In 2015 Rowland also founded the charity SicKids, (registered with the Charity Commission for England and Wales, registration number 1164131) and is now the Chairman of the Board of Trustees of SicKids.

British Medical Association

Rowland is the Deputy Chairman of the British Medical Association International Committee. He has previously served as Deputy Chairman and Vice Chairmanof the Junior Doctors Committee of the British Medical Association, and as a member of BMA Council.
