Biography

Aedas (, from Latin aedificare, "to build") is an international architectural firm and is one of the world's largest.The practice provides architecture, interior design, landscape design, urban design, masterplanning, and graphics. Aedas design experience includes mixed-use, office, retail, residential, hotel, infrastructure, education, culture, and adaptive reuse.

History

Beginning in Hong Kong and Southeast Asia (1985-2000)

Aedas was established in 1985 by Keith Griffiths in Hong Kong. Originally known as Hackett and Griffiths and later LPT Architects, the company was commissioned to design the new Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club on Middle Island (1986), followed by Landmark 2 and Gaysorn Shopping Centre in Bangkok (1994), and Pacific Plaza in Singapore.

The Forum at Exchange Square, Hong Kong

In 1993 the company secured its first Mass Transit Railway project in Hong Kong – the Siu Ho Wan depot to serve The Airport Express, Tung Chung Line and Disneyland Resort Line. This project was followed by further Mass Transit Railway work along the Tseung Kwan O Line, Tung Chung Line, Disneyland Resort Line, West Island Line, South Island Line and West Rail Line.

The company designed Pacific Plaza and John Hancock Tower and opened the Singapore office in 1994;and designed Kuala Lumpur Sentral and opened the Kuala Lumpur office in Malaysia in 1996.

During 2000s, the company were the architects upon the revitalisation of Prince's Building, Alexandra House, The Landmark and Chater House in Hong Kong's Central district,and in 2015 designed and delivered the redevelopment of The Forum at Exchange Square.

The company was renamed as Aedas in 2002 and expanded to Europe in the same year.

Aedas designed the Asia Air Freight Terminal 1 at Hong Kong International Airport in 1997. It was followed by airport commissions upon the Tradeport Logistics Centre in 2000,Terminal 1 East Hall expansion (2003), Asia Air Freight Terminal 2 (2006), DHL Central Asia Hub (2007), Terminal 2 (2007), SkyPier (2009), North Satellite Concourse (2009), Cathay Pacific Cargo Terminal (2013), Midfield Concourse (2016). Aedas is currently working on Carpark 4 Extension, Terminal 2 Expansion and the Third Runway Passenger Building. The firm was also appointed to design Shenzhen Airport Satellite Concourse in 2016.

Aedas opened its first China office in Beijing in 2002and was appointed to design Fortune Plaza 1 (2003). Other mixed-commercial projects in Beijing include TG Harbour View Apartment, R&F City, R&F Plaza and R&F Centre in Beijing. The company set up offices in Macau (2004), Shanghai (2005) and Chengdu (2005).

In Macau, Aedas delivered its first integrated casino resort project Sands Macauin 2004. Aedas was commissioned as Lead Architect for The Venetian Macao (2007),Four Seasons Hotel Macau (2008), Sands Cotai Central (2012), Marina Bay Sands (Singapore; 2011)and The Parisian Macao (2016).

The company was commissioned to design Dubai Metro (2004). The Dubai office was established in 2005 and the Abu Dhabi office was set up in 2007. In 2010 and 2011, Ocean Heights,Boulevard Plazaand Ubora Towers,all in Dubai, were completed.

Work in mixed-commercial sector (2010s)

Aedas’ completed mixed-commercial projects include The Star (2012) in Singapore; Starlight Place in Chongqing (2011), Center 66 in Wuxi (2014), Evergrande Plaza in Chengdu (2015), Sincere Financial Center in Chongqing (2015), MOKO in Hong Kong (2015), Olympia 66 in Dalian (2016), Suning Plaza in Xuzhou (2017), China. 65% of Aedas’ work is in China in 2006 and 15% in Southeast Asia.

Since 2014 Aedas has been advocating the design and building of high-density, high-rise city hubs. A paper “City Hubs” was written by Aedas and published by CTBUH 2016 International Conference.

Work in arts and culture sector (2010s)

In 2015, Aedas acquired UK practice RHWL and Arts Team,one of the leading designers of arts and cultural facilities in Europe. Recently completed projects include London Coliseum restoration (2004), Guildhall School of Music and Drama (2013) and Tara Theatre (2016)in London, UK.
