Biography
Andreas G. Orphanides (Greek: Ανδρέας Γρ. Ορφανίδης; born: 29 May 1955; from: Lapithos (Λάπηθος), Cyprus) is council member of the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education, and Professor of Humanities and Social Sciences (History, Anthropology and Archaeology) at European University Cyprus (EUC), having previously served and taught at universities and at other higher education institutions in the USA, Greece and Cyprus. He served as the first rector of EUC from the university's formal recognition and accreditation in 2007 until 2014, and previously as Dean of Academic Affairs of Cyprus College from 1990 until 2007. He also served on the governing board of Open University of Cyprus (OUC) between 2003 and 2011. His research into the history and pre-history of Cyprus has led him to publish 17 books and numerous articles and conference papers on various elements of the history of Cyprus, the archaeology of Cyprus, and higher education.
Work in higher education reform
A key driverof higher education reform in Europe (Bologna Process / EHEA) in general, and in Cyprus in particular, Orphanides is serving as a Council member of the Cyprus Agency of Quality Assurance and Accreditation in Higher Education, having previously been president of both the European Association of Institutions in Higher Education (EURASHE)and the European Quality Assurance Register of Higher Education (EQAR). He also played a key role from 2004 until 2012 as a member of the "E4 Group", operating within the framework of the Bologna Process, in the development and implementation of quality assurance in higher education in Europe and in drafting the European Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in Higher Education (ESG).
In Cyprus, he served at college and university administrative positions at all levels, as chair of the subcommittee of the Cyprus Rectors’ Conference for drafting the legislation governing Quality Assurance / Accreditation in higher education, as a member of the Ad-Hoc Committee for development of Cyprus into a regional center of higher education, which also compiled the law on private universities, as member of the Ad-Hoc Committee for unification of the laws of universities in Cyprus, as Vice-President of ECSA-Cyprus, as member of the Preparatory Committee for the establishment of Open University of Cyprus and as member of the Governing Board of Open University of Cyprus.
Music composer
Orphanides is also a music composer. His trajectory in music involved study of both classical and byzantine music and serving as chanter at St. Loucas Church at Lapithos, Cyprus (1963–1973), at St. Sophia’s Greek Orthodox Church at Albany, New York (1980–1986), and at Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church at Lowell, MA (1986–1988). He had played mandolin (Mandolinata Orchestra of A' Elementary School of Lapithos), clarinet (Philharmonic Orchestra of Greek Gymnasium of Lapithos) and accordion. His compositions include five symphonic works, over thirty songs, the university anthems of European University Cyprus and of Open University Cyprus, and four music CDs. Musical compositions of his have been performed in Cyprus, Greece, Austria, Estonia, Armenia and USA. He is the Second Prize Winner at the Malta International Composition Competition 2017 organized by Central Academy of Arts, Malta for his composition entitled "String Quartet 'Cyprus Zephyr'"
