Biography

Andō Nobumasa (安藤 信正, January 10, 1819 – November 20, 1871) was a Japanese daimyo of the late Edo period, who ruled the Iwakidaira Domain. He was a rōjū in the Tokugawa shogunate, and was active in the wake of Ii Naosuke's assassination. Andō himself was the target of an assassination attempt, which is remembered as the Sakashitamon Incident.
In 1868, during the Boshin War, Nobumasa took charge of the governance of Iwakidaira, and led its forces as part of the Northern Alliance (the Ōuetsu Reppan Dōmei).

Sakashita Gate Inceident

In 1862, six samurai from Mito Domain attempted to assassinate Ando outside the Sakashita Gate of Edo Castle. Ando barely survived the attempt. Rutherford Alcock was impressed that Ando appeared with his body bandaged and showing his spirit as an authority of the country just after he had been heavily injured.
