Biography
Al "The Aldgate Tiger" Phillips (25 January 1920 – 7 February 1999) was a Jewish English professional feather/light/welterweight boxer of the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s, who won the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC) British featherweight title, European Boxing Union (EBU) featherweight title, and British Empire featherweight title, and was a challenger for the British Empire featherweight title, and BBBofC British featherweight title, against Nel Tarleton, and Ronnie Clayton, his professional fighting weight varied from 124 1⁄2 lb (56.5 kg; 8 st 12.5 lb), i.e. featherweight to 137 lb (62 kg; 9 st 11 lb), i.e. welterweight. Al Phillips was ranked as the Number-3 featherweight in the world by The Ring magazine.
