At ROH 16th Anniversary Show, The Hung Bucks lost the ROH World Six Man Tag Team Championships against SoCal Uncensored (Christopher Daniels, Frankie Kazarian and Scorpio Sky). At the same press event, Page declared he wanted to be the first AEW Champion. However, in late May the match was cancelled due to "creative differences". As a result of the cancellation, a week before Double or Nothing they wrestled a match at Wrestle Gate Pro. In a surprise appearance, Page answered an open challenge from Pac that ended in disqualification with Page winning. After the match, Pac attacked Page's knee and said that his goal all along was to injure Page and with that done, he had no reason to show up at Double or Nothing. This was done to write the match off the card. Later that week on an episode of Being The Elite, Page was still nursing his kayfabe knee injury and said he could not wrestle at Double or Nothing. However, at the event Page was a surprise entrant in the pre-show Casino Battle Royale for an AEW World Championship opportunity. He would go on to win the match, last eliminating MJF.
On the following Being the Elite, Page requested Nick Jackson to book a singles match with MJF for Fyter Fest. However, phone connection issues lead to Jackson booking a four-way match between Page, MJF, Jimmy Havoc and Jungle Boy. At the event on June 29, Page won the match after pinning Havoc. At Fight for the Fallen on July 13, Page defeated Kip Sabian. After the match, Page was attacked by Chris Jericho, who would be his opponent in the first-ever AEW World Championship match after Jericho defeated Kenny Omega at Double or Nothing. Page would sustain a legit laceration above his right eye as a result of the attack. At All Out, Page faced Jericho for the AEW World Championship; Jericho defeated him to become the inaugural champion. On the inaugural episode of AEW Dynamite on October 2, Page was defeated by Pac. At Full Gear on November 9, Page would defeat Pac via pinfall to end the feud. On the November 20 episode of Dynamite, Page competed in the inaugural Dynamite Dozen Battle Royale, where he and MJF were the final two competitors remaining in the match. However, the following week on Dynamite, Page was defeated by MJF in a match where the winner would receive a diamond ring as a prize.
