Biography

Adam Lane (born September 22, 1968) is an American jazz bassist and composer, active in New York and San Francisco.

Life, education, career

Lane studied composition at Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut, with Anthony Braxton, and at California Institute of the Arts, Santa Clarita, California, with Wadada Leo Smith and Daniel Rothman.

In 1996, he received a Paternings Scholarship for study at the Darmstadt School for New Music, Darmstadt, Germany, where he studied double bass with Italian bassist Stefano Scodanibbio and attended master classes in composition with Karlheinz Stockhausen, Swiss composer Klaus Huber, and German composer Mathias Spahlinger.

After returning to the United States, Lane formed a quartet with saxophonist John Tchicai, trumpeter Paul Smoker, and drummer Barry Altschul, and recorded Fo(u)r Being(s) (2002) for C.I.M.P. label. Around that time, he also joined John Tchicai's Infinitesimal Flash, with saxophonist Francis Wong and drummer Mat Marucci.

In 2003, he collaborated with Blaise Siwula on the album Tandem Rivers (Cadence Jazz Records.) The same year, he and saxophonist/clarinetist John Tchicai released Dos (C.I.M.P.).

In 2006, Lane in a trio with Vinny Golia (reed player) and Vijay Anderson (drums) released Music Degree Zero.

In 2009, Lane performed on guitarist Luís Lopes' What Is When with Igal Foni (drums.)

In June 2012, Lane performed at the 53rd Ljubljana Jazz Festival in Ljubljana, Slovenia, with Full Thtrottle Orchestra—a nine-piece ensemble with Nate Wooley (trumpet), Taylor Ho Bynum (trumpet), Reut Regev (trombone), Tim Vaughn (trombone), David Bindman (tenor, soprano sax), Avram Fefer (alto sax), Matt Bauder (tenor, baritone sax), and Igal Foni (drums).

Recently, in 2018, Lane recorded Live Constructions Volume Two on Slam Productions ‎with Reggie Sylvester (drums), David Haney (piano), Julian Priester (trombone), and Daniel Carter (trumpet, tenor saxophone).

Lane has also composed a variety of works for chamber ensembles. His piece Mini Pig 2000 was commissioned by the California Ear Unit and performed at LACMA in January of 2000.

Lane divides his time between New York and San Francisco. In New York, he performs regularly with a trio featuring Louie Bellogenis and Lou Grassi and works in the Andrew Drury Quartet featuring percussionist Drury's compositions with guitarist Brad Shepik, and saxophonist Briggan Krauss.
