Adam Feinstein (born 24 February 1957) is a British writer, journalist, poet, translator, and the acclaimed English-language biographer of the Nobel Prize-winning Chilean poet, Pablo Neruda (Bloomsbury, 2004). He also writes on autism.
early life and Education
Feinstein was born on 24 February 1957. He received his BA degree in French and Spanish from King's College London (1976—1980.)
career
Feinstein's biography of Pablo Neruda—Pablo Neruda: A Passion for Life—was first published by Bloomsbury in 2004 to worldwide acclaim from, among others, Harold Pinter and Andrew Motion. In 2013, Feinstein launched Cantalao, a biannual magazine dedicated to Neruda's life and work.
Feinstein has published articles on Spanish and Latin American literature in many newspapers and magazines and has translated the work of Federico Garcia Lorca and Mario Benedetti for Modern Poetry in Translation. He has worked for the Latin American Service of the BBC and has been a London correspondent for one of Spain's leading national daily newspapers, El Mundo.
His book of translations from Neruda's Canto General, with color illustrations by the Brazilian artist, Ana Maria Pacheco, was published by Pratt Contemporary in 2013. He also wrote the introduction to the Folio Edition of Jorge Luis Borges' Labyrinths, which appeared in 2007.
Feinstein has also written on autism. In 1998, he founded an international autism magazine, Looking Up. His 2010 book A History of Autism: Conversations with the pioneers (Wiley-Blackwell, 2010) received widespread praise. In 2018, he authored Autism Works: A Guide to Successful Employment Across the Entire Spectrum. The book addresses the lack of understanding of the contributions people across the autism spectrum can make to the workplace, drawing attention to this vast untapped human resource. He also runs monthly online autism conferences on the Awares conference site for Autism Cymru, in London.
Over the years, Feinstein has written for the Guardian, the TLS, and the New Statesman and has broadcast for the BBC on Neruda and autism. His own poems and translations have appeared in Agenda and Modern Poetry in Translation.
