A. Roland Fields (June 10, 1884 — September 11, 1950) was an American award-winning film art director active in the 1940s. He won an Oscar for Blood on the Sun (1945) and was nominated for an Oscar for his work on Citizen Kane (1941) and The Magnificent Ambersons (1942).
Life and career
Fields was born on June 13, 1900, in New Orleans, Louisiana.
He made his debut in 1942 with Allan Dwan's Here We Go Again, starring Jim Jordan, Marian Jordan, and Edgar Bergen.
Also in 1942, he worked on Orson Welles' drama The Magnificent Ambersons, with Joseph Cotten, Dolores Costello, and Anne Baxter. For his work on the film, he was nominated for an Oscar for "Best Art Direction-Interior Decoration, Black-and-White" (shared with art directors Albert S. D'Agostino and Darrell Silvera.)
In 1945, he was an art director on Frank Lloyd's thriller Blood on the Sun, starring James Cagney and Sylvia Sidney, for which he won an Oscar award in "Best Art Direction-Interior Decoration, Black-and-White" category. He shared the award with art director Wiard Ihnen (1897–1979).
Between 1942 and 1951, Fields worked on 39 films, the last one being Edward Ludwig's Smuggler's Island, starring Jeff Chandler and Evelyn Keyes.
Death
Fields died on September 11, 1950, aged 50, in Los Angeles, California.
