He financed the construction of the original New York subway (1900–1904) and for many years headed the Interborough Rapid Transit Co., which ran the transit system. He also financed and led the construction of the Cape Cod Canal in Massachusetts, which opened in 1914. Belmont bought the land for and built New York's Belmont Park racetrack—named for his father—and was a major owner/breeder of thoroughbred racehorses.     Alfrederick Smith Hatch (July 24, 1829 – May 13, 1904) was an American investment banker who founded Fisk & Hatch along with Harvey Fisk. Hatch was the President of the New York Stock Exchange from 1883 to 1884. Hatch was born in Vermont to Horace Hatch (1788–1873) and Mary Yates Smith (1798–1859). In March 1862, Hatch and Harvey Fisk began a finance and insurance company called, Fisk & Hatch. The company initially focused almost exclusively in government bonds.     Sir Joshua Vanneck, 1st Baronet (1702 – 6 March 1777) was a British-Dutch merchant. Venneck was born in The Hague, the son of Cornelius Van Neck. He emigrated to Britain in 1722 and became a successful London merchant. This enabled him to purchase the estate of Heveningham Hall in Suffolk. In 1751 he was created a Baronet, of Putney in the County of Surrey. Vanneck married Mary Anne Daubuz, Huguenot, daughter of Stephen Daubuz, in 1732. He died in March 1777 and was succeeded in the baronetcy by his eldest son Gerard. His second son Joshua was raised to the Irish peerage as Baron Huntingfield in 1796. Baronetage of Great Britain

    Robert Pulsford (1814 – 3 June 1888) was a British Whig politician. Baptised on 21 April 1815 at Church of St John-at-Hackney, Pulsford was the son of William Pulsford and Martha, daughter of William Hobson. He died in 1888 at Hennock, Devon, leaving £192,468 to three sons and five daughters. Pulsford was elected a Whig Member of Parliament for Hereford at a by-election in 1841—caused by the resignation of Henry William Hobhouse—and held the seat until 1847 when he did not seek re-election.
