Biography

Sir Vivian Arthur Ramsey FREng (born 24 May 1950), is a former judge of the High Court of England and Wales and former civil engineer.

Education and early career

He was educated at Abingdon School and then after gaining a degree in Engineering Science and Economics from Oriel College, Oxford he enjoyed a notable career in civil engineering working with Ove Arup in both London and Libya.

Legal career

Sir Vivian was called to the Bar by Middle Temple in 1979, joined Keating Chambers in 1981 and took Silk in 1992. He was declared Construction Silk of the Year by Construction Design in 1992. He was made a Bencher of Middle Temple in 2002 and served as Head of Keating Chambers (2003–2005). Ramsey was appointed to the Queen's Bench Division in 2005 and received the customary knighthood. As a specialist in construction law, Sir Vivian was assigned to the Technology and Construction Court and was subsequently made Judge in charge of the Court in 2007. He was appointed a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2013.

He was on the governing body of Abingdon School from 2009-2016.
