Biography
S. Samar Hasnain FRSC is the Max Perutz professor of Molecular Biophysics at the University of Liverpool. He is current editor in chief for the Journal of Applied Crystallography. In 1991 he became a Fellow of the Institute of Physics and in 2002 he became a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry. Additionally, in 1997 he became a Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences and in 2011 a Fellow of the Society of Biology. He is also currently editor-in-chief for the Journal of Synchrotron Radiation.
Background
In 1970 Hasnain earned a Bachelor of Science (Honours) an M.Sc. in 1972 and a Ph.D. in 1977. His research areas include neurodegenerative diseases, methodical drug discovery, protein crystallography, and synchrotron radiation.
Research
Hasnain led a team of researchers who identified TDP-43 mutant proteins as potentially significant factors relating to motor neuron diseases via neurodegeneration.
He has also conducted other neurological studies.
