Biography

Philip John Algernon Sidney, 2nd Viscount De L'Isle, MBE (born 21 April 1945) is a British peer and former soldier.

Biography

Lord De L'Isle is the only son of William Sidney, 1st Viscount De L'Isle and his wife Jacqueline (née Vereker), a daughter of Field Marshal John Vereker, 6th Viscount Gort. He was educated at Tabley House, Mons OCS and Sandhurst. After service in the Rifle Brigade, in 1966, he became a Major in the Grenadier Guards and took early retirement in 1979. He was appointed Vice-Lieutenant of Kent in 2002 and is also a Freeman of the City of London and a member of the Worshipful Company of Goldsmiths. On 1 September 2011, he was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Kent. In 2012, he was made a commander of the Order of Saint John.

Marriage & Family

On 15 November 1980, De L'Isle married Isobel Tresyllian Compton, youngest daughter of the civil servant Sir Edmund Compton. They have two children: Sophia Jacqueline Mary Sidney (born 1983) and Philip William Edmund Sidney (born 1985).

De L'Isle succeeded to his father's titles in 1991.

Obscure Claim to the English Crown

If (1) Richard III's claim that Edward IV's marriage was invalid is true (see the notorious Titulus Regius); (2) Duke George of Clarence's attainment constituted a disqualification of his heirs claims to the crown; and (3) several acts of Parliament declaring who the rightful monarch are ignored, then the Viscount De L'Isle would have a claim to the English throne through Anne of York (1439-1476, Edward IV's and Richard III's eldest sister); Anne St. Leger (1476-1526); Thomas, Earl of Rutland (1492-1543); Henry, Earl of Rutland (1526-1563); John, Earl of Rutland (1559-1588); Lady Bridget Manners (1572-1604); Roger Tyrwhitt (1598-1642); Francis Tyrwhitt (1634-1673); (9) Catherine Tyrwhitt (1657-1737); Sir Thomas Hunloke, Bt. (1684-1732); Sir Henry Hunloke, Bt. (1724-1804); Henrietta Hunloke (1765-1811); Philip, Lord De L'Isle and Dudley (1800-1851); Philip, Lord De L'Isle and Dudley (1828-1898); William, Baron De L'Isle and Dudley (1859-1945); William, Viscount De L'Isle (1909-1991); and finally Philip, Viscount De L'Isle, b. 1945.
