Biography

Newton Ogilvie Thompson (27 May 1904 to 1 July 1992) was Chief Justice of South Africa 1971–1974 Thompson was educated at St. Andrew's College, Grahamstown and later at the University of Cape Town where obtained a B.A and LL.B. (with distinction). He practised as a lawyer in Cape Town from 1926 and became an advocate in 1944 and was elevated to the bench in 1949.

He became a judge of appeal in 1958 and served as Chief Justice from 1971 to 1974. He was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from Rhodes University in 1972.

He was married to Eve Wiener. 

He died in Kenilworth, Cape Town in 1992.
