Biography

Kalu Mehta (formally Kalyan Chand Das Bedi was the father of Guru Nanak Dev (1469–1539), the founder and first guru of Sikhs. He was born a Hindu.

A Khatri by caste of the Bedi clan, he served as the patwari (accountant) of crop revenue for the village of Talwandi in the employment of a Muslim landlord of that area, Rai Bular Bhatti. Guru Nanak’s mother was Tripta Devi and he had one elder sister, Bebe Nanaki who became a spiritual figure in her own right.

Kalu Mehta later became a disciple of the Guru, also his son.
