Biography

Master of the Cypresses, (fl. 1420-1440) was a Spanish painter and manuscript illuminator. His dates of birth and death are not known.

The Master of the Cypresses has been identified solely through his works. He received his name from his frequent use of cypress trees in miniatures painted for Seville Cathedral choirbooks. Wall paintings at the Ex-Monastery of San Isidoro del Campo and the illumination of a bible currently residing at the El Escorial museum in Madrid have also been attributed to him. His influences include Giotto, and his style shows characteristics of early Netherlandish, Seville and Toledo.
