Biography
Marvin Fisher (September 26, 1916 – August 21, 1993) was an American musician, composer, and songwriter known for composing such songs as "When Sunny Gets Blue," "Destination Moon," "Cloudy Morning," and "For Once in Your Life."
Life and career
Marvin Fisher was born on September 26, 1916, in New York City. He came from a musical family; his father, Fred Fisher(1875 – 1942), was also a well-known songwriter/composer whose songs included "Chicago," "Dardanella" and "Peg o' My Heart." His two siblings—Doris Fisher (1915 – 2003) and Dan Fisher (1920 – 2001)—were also songwriters.
Fisher began his formal musical education at the Institute of Musical Art in New York, now the Juilliard School, studying piano and theory. Along with the composing of pop songs such as "Cloudy Morning," "For Once in Your Life," and "When Sunny Gets Blue," he had an active career as a pianist for the Justin Stone Orchestra and arranger for the orchestras of Glenn Miller, Jimmy Dorsey, Tommy Dorsey, Les Brown and Johnny Green in the 1930s and 40s.
In the 1940s, Fisher became the West Coast representative for his family business Fred Fisher Music Company, which his father founded in 1907. After his fathers' death in 1942, he and Dan took over the firm's operations. Marvin later created a subsidiary of the firm called "Marvin Music," which published his own songs as well as those of Nat King Cole, Rosemary Clooney, and Peggy Lee.
Fisher's songs, which included "Cloud Morning" and "For Once in Your Life," were recorded by Nat King Cole, Joe Williams, Mel Torme, Mabel Mercer, and George Shearing.
Personal life
Fisher was married to his wife Pamela Fisher.
Death
Fisher died of a heart attack on August 21, 1993, at Southampton Hospital in Southampton, Long Island, at the age of 76.
