Biography

Marisa Seepersaud is a Guyanese paediatric surgeon. She was the only pediatric surgeon in the country of Guyana until 2021. She provides surgical care for children and newborn babies. She became one of the two surgeons in high demand later on. Seepersaud is the head of paediatric surgeons at Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). She set up training programs that were not available in Guyana She helped train people who want to become surgeons. Seepersaud also introduced daycare surgeries that admitted patients within 24 hours of surgery. 

Early Life

Seepersaud grew up in Guyana. As a child, she wanted to become an astronaut. Due to the conditions and resources they had to keep in mind, she wasn’t able to continue her desire.

After graduating from the University of Guyana School of Medicine, she went to study at the University of West Indies Jamaica, to learn more in-depth about the paediatric surgical program.

Right after attending both universities, Seepsaud joined Baby Heart. Baby Heart is a non-profit team that focuses on performing surgeries around the world for children.

Awards

In 2019, Seepersaud won the Canadian Association Paediatric Surgeon Global Scholar Award.
