Mabel Moir James
First woman political minister in Dominica, active in women's rights
Mabel Moir-James (1917-2010) was the first woman political minister in Dominica. Moir-James was also active in women's rights movements and founded the Women's Guild in Dominica.
Before entering politics, Moir-James worked with her husband in a drug-store business.
She became part of the Dominica Labour Party and won a seat for the Western District in the general elections in 1966. In 1967, Dominica received Associated statehood from Britain, and Moir-James became the Minister of Home Affairs. She served in that position from 1967 to 1970.
