Biography

Lucy Kocharyan (born 1960) is an Armenian journalist who has taken a stand in her country against gender based violence. She was chosen as a International Women of Courage in March 2020 by the US Secretary of State.

Life

Kocharyan was born in 1960 and became a journalist. She presents two programmes on Armenian Public Radio.

In August 2018 she began to speak out about children with mental health issues and gender based violence launching a "Voices for Violence" campaign. Gender based violence is a traditional part of her country and she has faced a lot of criticism for her position.

She was chosen as a International Women of Courage in March 2020 by the US Secretary of State. She was the first Armenian to win this award and the ceremony was attended by Anna Hakobyan who is the Armenian first lady.

After the award she was taken on a tour of Fulton County Juvenile Court by Judge Renata D. Turner.
