Ronald Syme states that Vipstanus Messalla was the son of Lucius Vipstanus Messalla. He was elected consul ordinarius in AD 115 alongside Marcus Pedo Vergilianus. He had a son named Lucius Vipstanus Claudius Poplicola Messalla.
