Biography

Kalpana Kannabiran is an Indian sociologist and lawyer. She is the current Director of Council for Social Development, Hyderabad. She is also the co-founder of the ASMITA Resource Centre for Women, a women's rights group. She is the daughter of notable human rights activist, K. G. Kannabiran.

Career

Kalpana Kannabiran has a PhD in Sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University and a Master of Laws (LLM) in Jurisprudence from Osmania University. She works in the field of women studies and legal aspects of discrimination.

In June 2009, she resigned from her post at the Nalsar University of Law claiming that there was a North-South divide on the campus. In October 2015, she was among the sociologists who signed a joint statement condemning the Dadri mob lynching, and the murders of M. M. Kalburgi, Narendra Dabholkar, and Govind Pansare.
