Biography
Jordan Cunningham is an American politician who was elected to the California State Assembly in November 2016 with 54.7% of the vote, despite being outspent by his opponent with a more than 2-to-1 margin. He is a Republican elected to represent the 35th district, encompassing all of San Luis Obispo County and portions of Santa Barbara County. Prior to being elected to the state assembly, he was a school board trustee for the Templeton Unified School District.
Jordan Cunningham is a former prosecutor, a taxpayer advocate, local businessman and attorney. He lives in Templeton with his wife Shauna and their four children.
Cunningham was born and raised on the Central Coast.
After graduating from Atascadero High School, Jordan attended Point Loma Nazarene University, receiving his bachelor’s in physics with honors. He then served as a Senate Fellow in the California Legislature, working for the Senate Minority Leader on policy and legislation.
Jordan obtained his law degree from the University of California, Berkeley. While in law school, he volunteered as a high school football and baseball coach. After graduation, Jordan worked in Washington D.C. as an attorney in private practice, a federal law clerk, and an attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice.
Desiring to serve the public and return home to raise his children, Jordan became a Deputy District Attorney in the San Luis Obispo County District Attorney’s Office. During his time as a Deputy DA, Jordan prosecuted a wide variety of crimes – including fraud, assault, domestic violence, and environmental crimes – compiling a stellar trial record. He now represents individuals, families, and local businesses as the owner and founder of Cunningham Law Group.
Cunningham he has volunteered as a coach for youth baseball, soccer, and flag football. He is the former President of the Central Coast Taxpayers Association, a nonprofit group dedicated to taxpayer education and advocacy for fiscal responsibility in government.
2016 California State Assembly
In 2016, Assemblyman Cunningham was appointed Vice Chair of the Assembly Committee on Rules as well as Vice Chair the Assembly Judiciary Committee. He is the only freshman Republican in his class to earn two Vice-Chairmanships. Cunningham was also appointed to the committees on Public Safety, Business and Professions, and Elections and Redistricting. During his first weeks in office, Cunningham was selected to serve on the Special Committee on the Office of the Attorney General, an ad hoc committee designed to review and vote on Governor Jerry Brown's appointment of the Attorney General.
