Biography

John Michael Spender QC (born 2 December 1935) is a former Australian politician, diplomat and barrister.
Born in Sydney, the son of politician Sir Percy Spender, he attended Yale University before becoming a barrister. In 1980 he was elected to the Australian House of Representatives as the Liberal member for North Sydney. He held the seat until his defeat by prominent independent Ted Mack. In 1996 he was appointed Australian Ambassador to France, a position he held until 2000. He was also Australian ambassador to Portugal (1996-1998) and Australian special envoy to Cyprus (1996-2000).
Spender was married to fashion designer Carla Zampatti and has three children. They married in 1975, but separated in 2008 and divorced in 2010.
