Biography

John Berwyn Evans (January 26, 1938–March 28, 2004) was an English and American publisher of The Village Voice.

Early life

Evans was born in Ruthin, Wales. He graduated with a degree in law from Cambridge University. As a sailor and professional yachtsman, Evans immigrated to the United States on a sailboat, and arrived to 79th Street Boat Basin, Manhattan, New York, after voyage completion from Venezuela.

Career

Evans immediately found a job in a port and worked there for over three years before joining The Village Voice. Because The Village Voice was bought by Rupert Murdoch, Evans moved to News Corporation in 1977. As a media businessman in Murdoch's News Corporation and subsequently his The Village Voice, Mr. Evans became its publisher.

In 1985, Evans was promoted to executive vice president of Murdoch Magazines, which included The Star and New Woman magazine. Soon, other magazines were added to the list such as Elle Seventeen, Mirabella, TV Guide and his own invention; Automobile. He later became president of the Murdoch Magazine Group, and when in 1990 the unit was sold, Evans moved back to London in order to run Rupert Murdoch's British newspapers such as The Times, The Sunday Times and The Sun. Evans returned again to United States in 1992 and founded News Electronic Data, an online publisher which was a subsidiary of News Corporation. While working there, Mr. Evans developed one of the first electronic travel information products. In 1995, Mr. Evans and his partners had acquired News Electronic Data from News Corporation and renamed it BizTravel.com. Prior to his death, Evans was a founder of REM Productions, a media consulting company.

Death and personal life

Evans was married and divorced three times. During his third marriage, Evans' wife gave birth to Morgan and Sarah the two which were nine and five respectively at the time of his death. Evans died as a senior executive, at the age of 66 of heart failure on March 28, 2004, at his home in the Annandale section of Clinton Township, New Jersey.
