Biography

James Hamilton, 3rd Lord Hamilton, Baron of Strabane (1633 – 16 June 1655) was an Irish peer, the elder son of Claud Hamilton, 2nd Baron Hamilton of Strabane and Lady Jean Gordon.
He succeeded his father in the peerage in 1638. A Roman Catholic, he joined Sir Phelim O'Neill and commanded the defense of Charlemont in 1650. The fortress fell to the Cromwellians in August; Hamilton became a fugitive and was captured soon after. His lands were confiscated, and he sought the protection of Sir Charles Coote; but in December 1650, he returned to his old cause and took arms again with Sir Phelim. He died at Ballyfathen in 1655, and was succeeded by his brother George.
