Biography

Jaiveer Agarwal (24 September 1930 – 16 November 2009) was an Indian ophthalmologist and founder of Dr. Agarwal's Eye Hospital. He was the recipient of the Padma Bhushan for medicine from then President of India A P J Abdul Kalam in March 2006.

Early life

Jaiveer Agarwal was born to Dr. R.S. Agarwal.

Career

Jaiveer Agarwal went to Madras along with his wife and set up a small clinic there.

Apart from running the hospital in Chennai, he went from village to village around the city, screening lakhs of patientshem and operating on them. Among his achievements remembered even today were hard-nosed campaigns for eye donation to treat corneal blindness, and correcting refractive errors among schoolchildren.

Personal life

Jaiveer Agarwal was married to Dr. Tahira Agarwal, an ophthalmologist. They have a daughter, Dr. Sunita Agarwal and a son Dr. Amar Agarwal, both ophthalmologists. The death of his wife in April 2009 affected his health badly. Jaiveer Agarwal died on 16 November 2009.
