Biography

Huang Zuoqing (黃佐卿; 1839–July 1902), also romanized as Huang Tso-ch'ing or Wang Tso-ch'ing, born Huang Zongxian (黃宗憲, also romanized as Huang Tsung-hsien), was a Qing dynasty entrepreneur who in 1881 founded Chang-kee Silk Filature, the first Chinese-owned modern silk filature, in Shanghai. He also partnered with the official Zhang Zhidong to found a state-sponsored silk filature in 1894, which allowed him to obtain official titles.

Most westerners knew him as Chang-kee (昌記, also romanized as Changji or Ch'ang-chi), which was actually the name of his business.
