Biography

Hill Mussenden was a British politician (1699—November 23, 1772). He was a member of parliament of Harwich from 1741 to 1747.

Hill Mussenden was born in 1699 to John Mussenden of Hillsborough, County Down, and his wife Jane Leathes, daughter of Adam Leathes.

Hill had an older brother, Carteret Leathes (July 1698—1780) who sat in the House of Commons from 1727 to 1747. At the 1741 British general election, Carteret nominated Hill to replace him at Harwich and went back to Sudbury.

Like his brother, Hill supported the Administration till the end of 1743, when they both voted with the Opposition on a motion to discontinue the service of the Hanoverians from British pay. He again voted against the Hanoverians in 1744, losing his place on the formation of the Broad-bottom Government in December. He abstained from voting on them in 1746.

Never standing again, he died on November 23, 1772, leaving his property to his brother.
