Biography
Gillian Anne Gehring OBE (born Gillian Anne Murray on 19 May 1941) is a British academic, and former Professor of Physics. She was the second female in the UK to become a Professor of Physics.
Early life
She was born in Nottingham, where she went to school. She studied Physics at the Victoria University of Manchester from 1959-62. From 1962-65 she studied for a DPhil in Theoretical Physics at the University of Oxford.
Career
University of Oxford
From 1970-89 she was a lecturer in Theoretical Physics at St Hugh's College, Oxford.
University of Sheffield
From 1989-2006 she was Professor of Solid-State Physics at the University of Sheffield, in the department of Physics and Astronomy in the Hicks Building. She is the only female to hold the position of Professor of Physics at the University of Sheffield.
Personal life
In 1968 she married Karl Gehring. She had two daughters in 1979 and 1981. She was awarded the OBE in the 2005 Birthday Honours. She has an interest in women in science, working with the Institute of Physics.
