Biography

Fyodor van Tuyll van Serooskerken (Russian: Фёдор Васильевич Тейль ван Сераскеркен), born Diederik Jacob van Tuyll van Serooskerken, was a Dutch nobleman who became a Russian major general and ambassador. He was one of the most important generals who fought during Napoleon's invasion of Russia.

Biography

Fyodor van Tuyll van Serooskerken was born in 1772 in The Hague, Holland. He served in the Dutch army until November 1803, but later joined the Imperial Russian Army and fought in the Napoleonic Wars as a Major General. After the war, he served various diplomatic positions for Russia in the Kingdom of Naples and Holy See. In 1822 he was appointed by Czar Aleksandr I to be the Russian Ambassador to the United States. He served until 1826, and died that same year.
