Edward Ernle

Sir Edward Ernle, 3rd Baronet (c. 1673–1729) of Charborough in Dorset, of Brimslade Park and Etchilhampton, both in Wiltshire, was an English politician.

Origins

He was a younger son of Edward Ernle of Ashlington and Etchilhampton in Wiltshire (the eldest son and heir apparent of Sir Walter Ernle, 1st Baronet (c. 1628–1682)) by his wife Anne Ashe, a daughter of Edward Ashe, MP, of Heytesbury, Wiltshire. Both his grandfathers were Members of Parliament.

Career

He succeeded his brother as 3rd Baronet in 1690. A portrait of him exists. He was elected a Member of Parliament for Devizes, Wiltshire, in 1695–1698, for the County of Wiltshire in 1698–1700 and four times for Wareham in the Parliaments of 5 March – 11 November 1701 and 22 February 1704 – 1705 (Parliament of England), 13 December 1710 – 1713 and 1722 – 31 January 1729 (Parliament of Great Britain), for Heytesbury in December 1701 – 1702, for Marlborough in 10 December 1708 – 1710 and for Portsmouth in 1715–1722.

Marriage & progeny

He married Frances Erle, the daughter and sole-heiress of General Thomas Erle (1650-1720), MP, of Charborough House, Dorset, by whom he had two daughters and co-heiresses.

Death & succession

He died on 31 January 1729, without male progeny, whereupon he was succeeded in the baronetcy by his kinsman Sir Walter Ernle, 4th Baronet (1676–1732) of Chirton, Wiltshire.
