Dominique Prosper de Chermont was the son of Joseph Alexandre de Chermont (1705 - 1748) and Marie-Anne Verla de Chermont. He was born on 24th November 1741 and died on 13th Novenber 1798.  Married to Mlle de Villesays Nastene. he was the " Colonel du regiment d L'Isle de France "  Governor General of Isle de France  during the second French Colonial Empire. He was Governor General of Pondicherry India from 1792 - 1793 - until the Siege of Pondicherry in 1793. Though the French lost possession of their Indian territories during this war - they regained them under the terms of the Peace of Amiens in 1802.
