Biography

Sheikh Butti bin Sohail became ruler of Dubai on 16 February 1906, due to the sons of Sheikh Maktoum bin Hushur still being too young. Sheikh Butti took power at the age of 55 years and died 6 years after taking office. Sheikh Butti continued the liberal policies of his predecessor. During his tenure violent storms befell the Persian Gulf, which killed many Dubaians. Other events during his reign included the uptake by some Dubaiers of smuggling goods and arms trafficking. This in December 1910 resulted in a British invasion, and particularly the allocation of HMS Hyacinth in Al Shindagha, which resulted in several skirmishes. This resulted in a demand for compensation worth 50,000 riyals, the delivery of four hundred rifles that belonged to the local Arabs, telex service and the permission to build an outpost.
