Anna Mackenroth (1861-1936), born in Germany, was Zurich's first practicing female lawyer. In 1894 she obtained her law doctorate in Zurich, and after that she became a Swiss citizen so that she could practice there. In November of 1899, she appeared in a case which involved sixty million francs.
She also headed the legal consultation office of the Association for the protection of women's rights, and was part of the steering committee of the Association for the reform of the education of women. She wrote several feminist dramas as well as other writings.
She died in poverty in a psychiatric hospital.
