Biography

Andrés Duque (born 1972 ) is a renowned Spanish-Venezuelan filmmaker.

Life and career

Andrés Duque was born on 18 June 1972 in Caracas, Venezuela.

He studied journalism and began his career in 1994 as a writer and director of reports on film in the Latin American division of HBO. While at HBO, he covered a variety of film festivals such as Cannes, Sundance, Berlin, and Toronto, among others.

In 2000, Duque emigrated to Barcelona, Spain for higher education. There, he attended UAB(Universidad Autónoma de Barcelona) and received a master's degree in Theory and Practice of Creative Documentary.

After graduation, he launched his film-making career in 2004 with Ivan Z, a documentary about the cult filmmaker Iván Zulueta. The film was nominated for a Goya Award.

His 2011 documentary, Color perro que huye (Color Runaway Dog), premiered at the Rotterdam International Film Festival and won Audience Award at the 7th edition of Punto de Vista International Documentary Film Festival.

In 2013, he received the City of Barcelona Award for his 2012 documentary, Dress Rehearsal for Utopia.

His most recent documentary, Oleg and the Rare Arts, an homage to the Russian composer Oleg Karavaychuk, premiered at Rotterdam with a loud applause. The film received nominations for Best Documentary Cinematography, and for Best Original Score, at Fénix Film Award.
