Biography
Alexandre Avril (born 19 April 1992) is a French politician of the Union of the Right for the Republic (UDR). He has been a member of the Regional Council of Centre-Val de Loire since 2021, and has served as mayor of Salbris since 2020. Since 2024, he has served as a vice president of the UDR.
Early life and career
Avril is the nephew of Jacky Avril. His maternal relatives were merchants and his paternal grandfather worked as a security guard for Matra. He grew up in Salbris and moved to Paris, where he studied at the École normale supérieure and HEC Paris, founded a development consulting firm for collectivities, and worked as parliamentary assistant to Socialist Party senator Jeanny Lorgeoux.
Avril was elected mayor of Salbris in the 2020 municipal elections, as the lead candidate of an independent right-wing list. In July 2020, he was elected president of Sologne des Rivières. In the 2021 regional election in Centre-Val de Loire, he was designated as lead candidate of the Union of the Right and Centre in Loir-et-Cher, and was elected to the regional council. He was elected unopposed as leader of The Republicans in Loir-et-Cher in November 2023, and took office in March 2024. He defended his PhD thesis, on the philosophies of René Girard and Friedrich Nietzsche, in December 2023.
Ahead of the 2024 legislative election, Avril supported Éric Ciotti's alliance with the National Rally. In September 2024, he announced his intention to resign as leader of the Loir-et-Cher Republicans the following month, in order to join Ciotti's newly founded Union of the Right for the Republic. In October 2024, he was appointed as a vice president of the UDR.
