Aleksandr (Vasilievich) Shevchenko (Ukrainian: Олекса́ндр Васи́льович Шевче́нко; 7 June 1883, Kharkiv – 28 August 1948, Moscow) was a highly influential Ukrainian avant-garde painter and theorist. In 1913 he wrote the book 'Neo-primiivizm', from which the Ukrainian and Russian art movement derives its name.
In 1890-1898 he studied at the Kharkiv Realschule, was a student of painter Dmytro Bezperchyi. From 1905 to 1906 he studied at the Académie Julian in Paris. During 1907-1909 he studied at the Moscow School of Painting.
