Biography

A. Lawrence Vaincourt was a Canadian writer best known for the poem Just a Common Soldier, also known as A Soldier Died Today.

The poem appears on thousands of websites, was reprinted in Ann Landers syndicated column and received the Bronze Helmet Award of Excellence. The poem appears on a marble monument at West Point, USA, as well as on the Canadian government's Veterans Affairs Canada.

His work appeared regularly in newspapers and journals such as Dialogue, the Washington Times and on CBC Radio.

His published books include Rhymes and Reflections, Don't Burn the Biffy, and Just a Common Soldier.

In 2004, Vaincourt won the Column of the Year Award from the Quebec Newspaper Association.

Vaincourt died on April 20, 2009.
